Wood Thrush – Mistico Park, CR

This Wood Thrush was a great bird to catch a glimpse of in the forest at Mistico Park, Costa Rica. It is much more common to hear the beautiful, flute-like song before getting a good look. These thrush breed across eastern North America and migrate south to Mexico and Central America for the winter. In many ways, it is the eastern version of the Swainson’s Thrush we know from northern and western North America. Both prefer forest cover and have wonderful songs, but the Wood Thrush stands out with its rusty head and bold spotting. Sometimes the most rewarding birding are the birds that make you work a little harder to see them.
