Mountain Bluebird – Pritchard, BC

The Mountain Bluebird is one of the most recognizable birds of British Columbia’s Thompson Region. It’s brilliant blue plumage contrasts beautifully with the area’s grasslands and ranchlands. We regularly found them near Kamloops, Pritchard Creek and Chase. The can be seen hunting insects from fence posts and scattered trees. These blue gems are among the first migrants to return each spring and are a welcome sign of warmer weather. The region is also known for its bluebird trails, networks of nest boxes maintained by volunteers to provide safe nesting sites where natural cavities are limited. These conservation efforts have helped Mountain Bluebird populations recover throughout the southern interior of British Columbia. Seeing a Mountain Bluebird perched against the Thompson’s open landscapes remains one of the most memorable birding experiences. This is also a testament to successful community conservation programs.
