Santa Barbara’s unique location—where the Santa Ynez Mountains rise above the Pacific Ocean—creates a rich diversity of habitats in a compact area, making it perfect for a half-day birding adventure.
On this guided tour, you’ll explore a thoughtfully selected route that may include coastal lagoons, estuaries, urban parks, and nearby foothills. Each stop offers different birding opportunities depending on the season, tides, and recent sightings.
Along the coast, you can expect a variety of shorebirds, gulls, terns, and possibly pelicans or passing seabirds. Wetland areas often host herons, egrets, ducks, and other water-loving species. In the surrounding scrub and oak habitats, we’ll look for local favorites like California Quail, Spotted Towhee, Bushtit, and a range of hummingbirds and songbirds.
This tour is designed to be flexible and tailored to your interests and experience level—whether you’re hoping to build your life list, improve your birding skills, or simply enjoy a beautiful morning in nature.
Frank will assist with identification by sight and sound, share insights about local ecosystems, and help you make the most of your time in this incredibly scenic region.

Bird Species You May See: Depending on the season and recent sightings, this tour may include a variety of coastal and Southern California specialties such as Brown Pelican, Heermann’s and Western Gulls, Elegant Tern, Black Oystercatcher, Willet, and Marbled Godwit along the shoreline. In wetlands, you may encounter Great Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, and a range of ducks and waders, while nearby scrub and oak habitats offer chances to see California Quail, Wrentit, Bushtit, Spotted and California Towhees, and Bewick’s Wren. Hummingbirds are a highlight, with Anna’s present year-round and seasonal species like Allen’s and Black-chinned possible, along with songbirds such as Lesser Goldfinch and Oak Titmouse. Raptors including Red-tailed Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk, White-tailed Kite, and Turkey Vulture are also regularly observed.

Frank the Bird Guy
Frank is an avid birdwatcher whose passion for birds has led him to serve on the board of both Ventura Audubon Society and Conejo Valley Audubon Society where he is currently President. He is the owner of the Wild Birds Unlimited store in Ventura as well as the coordinator and compiler for the Ventura Christmas Bird Count. During the pandemic, Frank began offering bird education classes online as “Frank the Bird Guy” and has shared the joy of birds with thousands worldwide.
