Red-legged Honeycreeper – La Fortuna, CR

The Red-legged Honeycreeper is the greatest shades of blue found in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. We ran into this male on the grounds of Las Orquídeas Hotel. There were shrubs, mature trees, and forest edges created excellent habitat for birds. The surrounding area proved just as rewarding, with a steady mix of tanagers, toucans, woodcreepers, and hummingbirds. Male Red-legged Honeycreepers are unmistakable with their deep cobalt-blue plumage, black mask, and vivid red legs. Females of the same species are a much greener bird altogether. They feed on nectar, fruit, and insects, using their slightly curved bill to reach flowers and probe among leaves. Sometimes the best birding in Costa Rica is just outside your hotel room.
