Crested Guan – Volcan Arenal, CR

The Crested Guan is one of the signature birds of Arenal Observatory Lodge. This individual was making its way toward the raised feeding platform with a flock of other guans. They arrived alongside a lively mix of tanagers, honeycreepers, oropendolas, toucanets, and other tropical birds. It is the kind of gathering that keeps birders scanning in every direction for an hour. Despite their turkey-like size, Crested Guans move surprisingly quietly through the canopy. As they move, they are feeding on fruit, leaves, and flowers. Their long tails and shaggy crest make them easy to identify. They often announce their presence with low, gruff calls before stepping into view. Watching an entire flock emerge from the forest onto the feeding platform is one of the highlights at Arenal Observatory Lodge.
