Dusky-capped Flycatcher – La Fortuna, CR
While birding Costa Rica, this Dusky-capped Flycatcher perched on a wire fence in the front yard of a farmhouse near La Fortuna, Costa Rica. Its grayish head, pale throat, and bright yellow belly made it easy to pick out against the surrounding greenery. Dusky-capped Flycatchers often hunted from exposed perches, watching carefully before flying out to capture insects. Farmland edges, gardens, and scattered trees provided plenty of these convenient hunting posts. This bird seemed perfectly comfortable around the house, using the fence as its personal observation deck. The species breeds from the southwestern United States and Mexico south through Central America to parts of South America, with many tropical populations remaining in the same general region year-round.
