Blue Jay – Cochrane, AB
We found this Blue Jay sitting on a weathered stump in the foothills near Cochrane, Alberta. Blue Jays belong to the corvid family, a group known for intelligence, problem solving, and complex social behavior. In the foothills, these birds often traveled through aspen groves and spruce forests searching for seeds, berries, and insects while storing extra food for colder months. The strong sunlight in this scene highlighted the bird’s layered feather structure and bright wing pattern. Interestingly, the blue coloration seen on a Blue Jay is not produced by blue pigment. Instead, microscopic feather structures scatter light, creating the vivid blue appearance birders recognized throughout North America. Just another one of the amazing birds that we have come across in our travels.
