Serving as a critical stopover along the Central and Mississippi Flyways, the Texas coast is the first landfall for countless migrants after their exhausting 600-mile journey across the Gulf of Mexico. This makes the region a concentration point for warblers, vireos, buntings, thrushes, and other songbirds seeking food and rest.
Beyond migrants, the varied habitats—coastal flats, prairies, marshes, and beaches—host an abundance of year-round species. Shorebirds thrive on the beaches and tidal flats, while freshwater marshes hold rails, gallinules, bitterns, and ducks.
