Western Kingbird – Neskonlith, BC
A Western Kingbird was flycatching along the road from Chase to Kamloops. This is a place where open grasslands, fence lines, and scattered shrubs created ideal habitat for this flycatcher. The pale gray head, clean white throat, olive-brown back, and bright yellow belly stood out clearly. Western Kingbirds are often confused with Tropical Kingbirds. Where the Western shows a paler gray chest and head with less olive coloring overall and lacks the notched tail. Tropical Kingbirds usually appear brighter, with a greener back and a heavier bill. A useful field mark for the Western Kingbird is the white outer tail edges, often visible in flight. We regularly found these birds hunting from exposed perches throughout British Columbia’s interior valleys, where their sharp calls carried across the dry landscape.
