Pileated Woodpecker – Milner, BC
The male Pileated Woodpecker is identifiable by its red crest and red cheek stripe. It prefers mature forests with large, decaying trees. This bird chips long rectangular cavities while searching for ants. Fresh wood chips below a trunk often reveal its presence. Its call is loud, resonant, and carries through dense woods. A cool fact: its tongue can extend nearly four inches beyond its bill. Sightings in Milner are regular where old cedars and firs still stand. Have a guide show you where you can find a Pileated.
