Rock Sandpiper – Sandheads, BC

A Rock Sandpiper perched on coastal rocks during our 2024 KBA count by boat. We do not get to see this hardy bird often in Vancouver. Its dark plumage, spotted breast, and sturdy yellow-based bill matched classic traits noted in field guides. The Rock Sandpiper closely resembles its cousin, the Purple Sandpiper, but shows a browner tone and brighter legs in winter. The bird foraged along wave-washed stones, showing its strong tidal feeding habits. Visit 10,000 Bird Tours to contact a guide if you are interested in getting out to see one.
