Calliope Hummingbird at Nk’mip Desert

At Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre in Osoyoos, visitors will see the dazzling display of a male Calliope Hummingbird. This is the smallest bird in Canada and the only one with a serrated magenta gorget. During courtship, this tiny desert jewel perches among sagebrush and antelope brush. It flares its iridescent throat feathers in the sunlight to create a fiery spectacle meant to impress females. The performance highlights both the bird’s beauty and the remarkable biodiversity found within Canada’s only desert ecosystem. Nk’Mip is a premier destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers seeking unforgettable wildlife encounters in British Columbia’s South Okanagan.
