Ruddy Ground-Dove in Tulum, Mexico

The Ruddy Ground-dove is easy to spot in Tulum, Mexico’s Park of the Hurricanes if you slow down. It blends into the rocky paths and grassy patches as it searches for seeds. Small and compact, it has warm brown feathers, dark wing spots, and pink legs. Most of the time it walks along the ground, only flying in short, low bursts when disturbed. This little dove has a wide range, from Mexico and Central America down into much of South America. A cool fact is that it is one of the most widespread small doves in the region. Despite its size, it is tough and adaptable. When it takes off, its wings make a quick rattling sound that sets it apart. Some of its cousins, like the Common Ground Dove or Inca Dove, can be mistaken for it at first glance. The Ruddy is slightly larger, with a richer rufous tone on its wings that helps tell it apart.
