Ojai Birding – Off the Beaten Path

Ojai, California is a hidden gem for birdwatchers in Southern California. Just 90 minutes from Los Angeles, Ojai offers a unique mix of mountain canyons, oak savannas, and riparian woodlands. These habitats make it a magnet for both resident and migratory birds. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just starting out, a day trip through Ojai’s top birding spots is our recommendation. La Cañada Canyon Road, Lake Casitas, Old Creek Ranch, and Wheeler Gorge Campground are four of the spots we stopped. Each offers rich bird diversity, scenic views, orange groves and unforgettable wildlife encounters. Along the way, you’ll find welcoming local restaurants like Zaidee’s Bar and Grill. You will also run into cozy accommodations at the Emerald Iguana and Blue Iguana Inns. perfect for turning your birding day into a weekend escape.

La Cañada Canyon Road: Soaring with California Condors

Begin your birdwatching adventure along La Cañada Canyon Road, one of the few places in Southern California where you might witness the majestic California Condor gliding high above the ridges. This stretch of road offers excellent vantage points for raptors, including Red-shouldered Hawks and Turkey Vultures, while the dense underbrush hides Wrentits, whose bouncing song is often heard before the bird is seen. Photographers and birders alike will find this area ideal for observing birds of prey and songbirds against the dramatic canyon backdrop.

Lake Casitas: A Hotspot for Hooded Orioles and Phainopeplas

Just a short drive from La Cañada, Lake Casitas Recreation Area provides a different birding experience. It’s open waters, reeds, and surrounding sycamores are home to Hooded Orioles, silky Phainopeplas, and active flocks of Cassin’s Kingbirds. Waterbirds like American Coots, Great Egrets, and Pied-billed Grebes are commonly spotted near the shoreline. This is a fantastic stop for beginner birders as well. The clearly marked trails and easy vehicle access to diverse habitats is what makes it so likable.

Old Creek Ranch: Private Lands, Big Birding Potential

While Old Creek Ranch is a winery, birders can have a picnic in one of the arbors. The area’s mix of native oaks and vineyards supports a wide range of species including Acorn Woodpeckers, Western Bluebirds and Lesser Goldfinch. Even from the perimeter, you can glimpse flycatchers and warblers moving through during the spring and fall. If you’re using eBird, Old Creek Ranch is a commonly reported hotspot in the Ojai area.

Wheeler Gorge Campground: Woodland Birding in the Los Padres National Forest

End your day at Wheeler Gorge Campground, located in the cool, shaded canyons of Los Padres National Forest. The campground is rich with chaparral and oak woodland species, offering excellent chances to see Dark-eyed Juncos, Spotted Towhees, Anna’s Hummingbirds, and more Phainopeplas. The soundscape here is peaceful—perfect for nature lovers who enjoy a slower-paced birding experience. Camping is available, or you can head back into Ojai for the night.

Where to Eat and Stay in Ojai After Birding

Ojai isn’t just a birding destination—it’s also known for its charming small-town hospitality and its Pixie Oranges. We made it a destination for another reason, it was Pixie Orange season. Make sure you stop by one of the orange orchards and smell the blooms in the spring. Zaidee’s Bar and Grill in downtown Ojai offers a lively atmosphere and hearty meals ideal after a full day outdoors. For a rustic, outdoor dining experience, stop by Ojai Deer Lodge. This is a great place where you can enjoy smoky barbecue and local beers under the stars. If you’re spending the night, the Emerald Iguana Inn provides comfortable, bird-friendly lodging. It also has a sister property called the Blue Iguana Inn. They both have easy access to trailheads and local shops.
