More Information & Itinerary

Cobá is not only one of the Yucatán’s most fascinating Mayan archaeological sites, it is also a premier birding hotspot—ranked #1 on eBird for the region. With its mix of wetlands, lakes, and dense jungle, this area offers exceptional bird diversity and a unique cultural backdrop.

Your day begins with an early pickup and a guided walk around Lake Cobá, where you’ll search for water birds such as Snail Kite, Purple Gallinule, Spotted Rail, and Ruddy Crake, along with colorful songbirds including orioles, tanagers, and seedeaters.

As the archaeological site opens, you’ll be among the first to enter. Birding among the ruins and jungle trails, you may encounter the striking Ocellated Turkey, Turquoise-browed Motmot, Collared Aracari, Black Catbird, Rose-throated Tanager, Orange Oriole, multiple species of trogons and woodpeckers, and the charismatic Yucatán Jay. Depending on the season, it’s possible to see 40 to 80 species in a single outing.

After a rewarding morning, enjoy a fresh brunch before returning to your hotel. For those wishing to extend the adventure, you can add a visit to a nearby cenote for a refreshing swim or to the Punta Laguna Nature Reserve to explore more wildlife.
