Petrels, Shearwaters, Diving Petrels
Procellariidae is a family of seabirds, commonly known as petrels, shearwaters, fulmars, and prions, that are highly adapted to a pelagic (open ocean) lifestyle. They are found globally, but are particularly abundant in the Southern Hemisphere. These birds possess unique tubular nostrils on their bills, used for salt excretion and an enhanced sense of smell, aiding in locating food over vast ocean expanses. They are skilled fliers, capable of long-distance migrations, and primarily feed on fish, squid, and krill, often captured by diving or surface seizing. Procellariids breed on remote islands, often in large colonies, and many species are long-lived.
