The Tarcoles region is widely recognized as one of Costa Rica’s finest birding destinations. Located along the country’s Central Pacific coast, this unique area is where tropical dry forest meets humid rainforest alongside mangroves, wetlands, rivers, and coastal habitats. The remarkable variety of ecosystems supports an exceptional diversity of birdlife, making it possible to observe well over 100 species in a single morning.
Your morning begins in the bird-rich Tarcoles region, where you’ll explore quiet roads, forest edges, wetlands, and other productive habitats that offer outstanding opportunities to observe many of Costa Rica’s most iconic tropical birds.
One of the tour’s highlights is the chance to see magnificent Scarlet Macaws, which are regularly encountered flying overhead or feeding in the surrounding forests. You’ll also search for colorful species including Yellow-throated Toucan, Slaty-tailed Trogon, Black-throated Trogon, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, White-whiskered Puffbird, and an impressive variety of parrots, hummingbirds, tanagers, woodcreepers, and flycatchers.
The Tarcoles region is also one of the best places to look for several regional specialties, including Golden-naped Woodpecker and Riverside Wren, species largely restricted to southern Costa Rica and neighboring Panama. With a little luck, you may also encounter soaring King Vultures, Common Black-Hawks, Gray Hawks, and other raptors.
The diversity of habitats means every stop offers something new, making this tour an excellent choice for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, and birders of all skill levels. By late morning, it’s common to record 120 species or more, depending on the season and bird activity.

Patrick O’Donnell
Pat started birding in his hometown of Niagara Falls, NY at the age of
8. He has worked as a field assistant in a variety of bird studies in
different corners of the USA, helped with macaw studies in Tambopata
Peru, and has guided birders in Ecuador and Peru. In 2007, he moved to
Costa Rica where he became a legal permanent resident and guide for
hundreds of clients throughout the country. Pat is a board member for
the official bird list for Costa Rica, a country wide reviewer for
eBird, and one of the founders of Birding Field Guide apps. He is also
the author of the ebook, “How to See, Find, and Identify Birds in Costa
Rica”, and writes and consults about birds, birding, tourism,
conservation, and natural history.
